Over the past 18 months to June 2016, China has invested more than US $75 billion (67.5 billion euros) in building the infrastructure of the Belt and Road Initiative in a bid to boost regional cooperation and trade. Since 2010, in line with the Belt and Road Initiative, DHL has been providing regular rail freight services in several cities in China, connecting with its road transportation solutions throughout Southeast Asia and shipping services from North Asia, including Japan and Taiwan.

Goods from Southeast Asia and other parts of North Asia are transported by road and sea into China's rail system, then connected to Europe and then across the continent through the local road system. This extensive service system of rail, road and sea provides customers with additional logistics routes and facilitates trade between the two economic regions of Europe and Asia.

"We are committed to building logistics services that connect China to the rest of Asia and to the European market through a combination of road, rail and sea transport," says Alex Wong, chief executive of DHL Global Freight China. "This integrated multimodal solution enables customers to better manage their supply chain, increasing flexibility while saving costs and helping to reduce carbon emissions."

Overall, intermodal solutions can reduce transportation costs to up to one-sixth of air freight while reducing carbon emissions by up to 90 percent, making them attractive to smes and multinational customers.

DHL today announced three new multimodal routes:
Sea and rail: A LCL service linking Japan and Germany that allows customers to export small quantities of goods for half the cost of standard air freight. From Kobe, the goods are transported by sea to Taicura, then by rail via hubs such as Duisburg, Lodz, Mavasevich or Warsaw, and finally to Hamburg in about 22 days.
Road and rail: A FCL service connecting Vietnam with Europe that first transports goods by road from Hanoi to Chengdu and then by rail to European hub cities such as Lodz, Duisburg and Hamburg in 21 days. The Vietnam-Europe LCL service is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Rail, road and sea transport: To enhance the southern rail transport corridor opened in 2015, the newly added Chengdu-Istanbul transport service line traverses three Central Asian countries -- Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and finally arrives in Istanbul via two sea transit routes, with a total transport time of 14 days.
The three new service routes build on a number of major investments DHL has made over the past 12 months, including the opening of the Japan-Suzhou-Warsaw multimodal transport service announced in November 2015, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Chengdu Port and Logistics Office in May 2016 to work together to improve the city's infrastructure and customs processes.
